Elbrus South Route Ascent — Camping Program

Our Elbrus ascent follows the most popular southern route, but the approach to the upper camp is set away from hotels and the cable car.

This option is for those ready to leave civilization behind and immerse themselves in the life of a tent camp. You'll walk the entire route from start to finish on your own feet, so good physical fitness is essential.

We invite outdoor enthusiasts who want to conquer the highest peak in Russia and Europe!

Program Itinerary

Day 0: Arrival

This day is optional but highly recommended for your comfort.

We will meet you at the airport, at Mineralnye Vody railway station, or at Pyatigorsk railway station, and transfer you to our office in Pyatigorsk.

In a relaxed setting, we will sign all necessary documents and check your gear and clothing for the ascent. If anything is missing, you can rent it on the spot — we have everything you need.

Pyatigorsk is a resort town. You can stay overnight at any of the many hostels or hotels (prices start from 800 RUB).

Day 1: Transfer to the Elbrus Region

If you chose not to arrive earlier, please be at the office by 11:00 AM.

At around 12:00 PM, there will be a briefing where your guide will introduce themselves, give an overview of the tour, explain safety rules and mountain etiquette, and answer your questions.

At 1:00 PM — departure to the Elbrus region.

The tent camp has a unique atmosphere that will make your journey unforgettable. All participants are accommodated in tents — 2–4 people per tent.

Don't worry about equipment — if you're missing anything, you can rent everything you need from us.

For meals, there are two options: you can purchase a pre‑calculated food package for the entire tour (every meal is planned for each day), or — if you prefer to use your own supplies — you can always cook independently.

Day 2: Acclimatization Hike — Mount Cheget

Breakfast preparation.

We'll dive headfirst into acclimatization. You'll have walking and breathing technique sessions — all surrounded by stunning views of the Caucasus mountains and the peaks of Elbrus.

We'll hike up on foot for training and acclimatization, then take the cable car down to save your legs and conserve energy for the next day.

After returning to camp, you'll have time to rest and prepare for the next day. In your free time, we recommend walks around the area.

Day 3: Observatory & Devich'i Kosy Waterfall

After breakfast, we pack up the tent camp and leave civilization behind, heading into the mountains with our backpacks.

Although the final destination for today is the Observatory, along the way we'll visit the Devich'i Kosy Waterfall. It is considered one of the top 20 most beautiful waterfalls in Russia — today you'll have the chance to see it with your own eyes.

The water here is ice‑cold and incredibly tasty. On a hot day, the mist from the roaring streams is refreshing.

Upon reaching our destination, we set up the tent camp and settle in for rest.

Day 4: Transfer to the Ice Base

In the morning, we pack up the camp and move on — drawing ever closer to our goal: the summit of the dormant volcano.

Today is another day away from tourist trails. We'll cross to the Ice Base — a former glaciologists' base located at 3,720 m, at the junction of the Terskol and Garabashi glaciers. The base has seen various periods of use — for medical, meteorological, and physical expeditions. Today, it's a place for true romantics and admirers of the boundless night sky and the silence of mountain peaks.

Another important milestone today: a lesson in self‑arrest technique on a snow slope using an ice axe, and rope‑team walking. Pay close attention — these skills are essential for the ascent.

We set up the tent camp and rest.

Day 5: Transfer to Priyut 11

Packing up the tent camp.

Today is a true adventure. From the Ice Base, you'll cross the Garabashi glacier in a rope team to Priyut 11. Thanks to the previous ice training, you'll already have all the necessary skills. Crampons will be required for the icy sections.

Priyut 11 is an iconic location on Elbrus. The hut was opened in 1938 at 4,050 m. For a long time, it was an excellent, comfortable shelter for climbers — until it burned down due to carelessness. This fire is recorded as the highest‑altitude fire in history. Now, this legendary site is slowly being revived.

We set up the tent camp and rest before the important day ahead.

Day 6: Acclimatization Ascent

Today is the dress rehearsal — the acclimatization climb.

We'll go light to 5,000 m, gaining 900 m of elevation — an excellent training stimulus for your body.

Proper acclimatization is the key to a successful ascent: your body needs to adapt to lower oxygen levels and reduced atmospheric pressure.

After descending, you can rest in the tent camp.

Day 7: Rest Day

Before the big day, you need proper rest.

Today includes a short walk to keep your muscles and respiratory system toned — otherwise, it's a relaxing day at the tent camp.

Go to bed early in the evening so you're well‑rested before the summit.

Day 8: Elbrus Summit Day

Summit day. Wake up at midnight. 1.5 hours to get ready.

From the assault camp, we go in crampons, with ice axes and headlamps. By this point, you'll be well‑acclimatized and know how to walk correctly, breathe efficiently, use crampons, and self‑arrest with an ice axe in case of a slip.

On difficult sections, you'll walk in a rope team. The ascent takes 8–10 hours depending on participants' fitness, weather, and snow conditions. Descent takes another 3–4 hours.

After hours of effort and a challenging climb, you'll be rewarded with a magnificent view from the West Summit — 5,642 meters above sea level.

Regardless of the outcome, after 1:00 PM all group movement is downhill only.

During the ascent, you'll be sustained by snacks (dry rations) and thermoses with tea or hot drinks — which you arrange yourself.

Overnight at the tent camp.

*If you make it back down before the cable car closes (by 4:00 PM), you can transfer to Pyatigorsk on the same day.

Day 9: Descent to Azau Clearing — Return to Pyatigorsk

Breakfast. Pack up the camp. Take the cable car down to Azau, where the group transfer to Pyatigorsk departs. The tour ends here.

Days 10–11: Reserve Days

Reserve days in case of bad weather after acclimatization and rest.
