How to Train for Mountaineering (Elbrus‑Focus)

Before You Start

Get medical clearance. Reputable guide services require a complete medical history.

Start training at least 16 weeks before your trip. Earlier is better.
Training Principles — Principle Details

Cardio base — 3–4 sessions per week, 45–90 min each, in Heart Rate Zone 2 (130–150 bpm)
Intervals — 2 sessions per week, 30–45 min each. Improves VO₂ max and oxygen utilization at altitude
Strength — 2 sessions per week, 2–3 sets per exercise
Hiking days — 1 day per week. Progressively increase pack weight and elevation gain
Rest — 1 full rest day per week. Every 4–6 weeks: reduce load by 25–50% for recovery

Cardio & Intervals

Zone 2 (aerobic base) : Weight‑bearing activities are best: trail running, hiking, snowshoeing, stair climbing with a pack. Gym machines (treadmill, elliptical), cycling and swimming are good alternatives for recovery days.

Intervals (VO₂ max): Repeat high‑intensity efforts at a hard pace, with low‑intensity recovery in between. Example: 4 × 1‑mile repeats at hard pace, with 5 min slow jogging/walking between. Or: sprint up stairs/bleachers, jog down slowly, repeat 4–6 times.

Key metric: Your goal is to sustain Zone 2 effort for 3+ hours without stopping.
Hiking Days (The Most Important Session)

Once a week, do a hike that mirrors your hardest climbing day.

Strength, Balance & Flexibility Exercises

Do 2–3 sets of each exercise, 2 times per week. Rest 30–45 sec between sets.

  • Week 16: Very light activity. No strength training. Focus on sleep (8+ hours per night), hydration, and final gear checks.
